In November 2009 Contender Sailcloth introduced the first HIGH TENACITY yarn specially formulated for sailcloth : FIBERCON. As a mature market, the manufacture of polyester fibers has - on many occasions - been outsourced to spinning companies that, in many cases, no longer provide fiber to the quality and specifications necessary for weaving superior sailcloth. Although the trading name of these fibers has remained the same, the actual performance of the fiber has changed dramatically. As the leader in premium woven sailcloth, Contender has long realised that the fiber used in our cloth is as important as the weave and finish. We have always been in control of the weave and finish and now we have taken steps to control the fiber. FIBERCON is the first fiber specially formulated for use in sailcloth and is spun according to the strict manufacturing standard ISO 9000. It is not a fiber used in seatbelts, carpets or tyres; it is exclusively spun for Contender to our requirements for modulus, tenacity, shrinkage and detex size. High tenacity and constant shrinkage from batch to batch means these fibers create the tightest woven sailcloth available anywhere in the world. By maximising the number of warp and fill intersections through weaving and further heat setting, we can produce a sailcloth that offers inherent strength and stability found in no other sailcloth. The name Contender has always been associated with quality. It is only fitting that when our competitors are looking for ways to cut costs and sourcing sailcloth from the Far East, Contender has invested in spinning its own fiber to control the quality of the fabric it sells. In addition, we can also ensure that our total manufacturing process meets the strictest EU environmental standards, so that Contender, like so many other companies in the EU, can contribute in its own way towards to a greener planet.
